Continuing Professional Development

During October Carol O’Brien, Physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor at Align, attended the Emergency Responder to the Athlete course in New York. This particular course is a recommended course of the American Academy of Sports Physiotherapy (AASPT) and comes highly accredited.

The course itself offered invaluable knowledge and skills in the area of emergency management of the athlete. The course covered areas such as trauma management, wound care, splinting of fractures, concussion  along with management of medical emergencies such as heatstroke.

Meeting other physiotherapists from diverse sporting backgrounds such as the NBA, ice figure skating and american college football was also a highlight of the course. Hearing their experience of working with these athletes was fascinating and proved to further Carol’s own interest in the area of sports physiotherapy.

During the US touch rugby nationals, Carol had the opportunity to put what she had learned on the course into practice while providing physio cover for the four Cayman teams over the course of the tournament.
