WELLNESS TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR

By Kristina Maxwell, Physiotherapist

Health is the new wealth and here are a few tried-and-true wellness tips from which your body and mind can profit in 2018 quicker than you can say “New Year’s resolution.”

Be more active. More daily physical activity can be incorporated into your current routine by parking on the far side of the parking lot, taking the stairs or throwing a ball outside with your child or dog for a few minutes. Even small (and easy) changes such as these have been proven to improve mood, boost energy and promote better sleep.

Try to achieve relative balance in your life. Although work and family obligations are important, it’s also just as important to find time for yourself because you can’t pour from an empty cup. Finding some “you time” can be as simple as taking 10 minutes to clear your mind in a quiet room while sipping a cup of tea or diffusing your favorite essential oil. Just doing this can maximize the absorption of nutrients, control overeating and reduce anxiety.

Take time to stretch. The average person spends most of his or her day in a flexed position while sitting, driving or using technology. This promotes a tight chest/shoulders and tight hips. Taking a few moments to stand and stretch for every two hours of sitting can promote better blood flow, decrease muscle spasms and knots and decrease fatigue.
